Tip#1041: Facing the Monsters in Your Life - Anxiety & Bullying - Colossal

This week I had a breakthrough for coping with an unexpected anxiety trigger. I had to face a form of consistent bullying via email and had experienced fear and overwhelming anxiety. And yet I knew there was a silver lining buried underneath and realized this was a perfect opportunity to apply the teachings of Researcher, Author & Lecturer, Dr. Joe Dispenza that I mentioned in previous tip#1040.

Dr. Joe reminded me of what I’d been learning all these years and it's that current anxiety triggers are actually activating an older unresolved issue that the body and subconscious still remembers. The pain I felt was really from the past. So the first part of transforming the negative energy and feeling better was to watch Dr. Joe interviews and lectures on Youtube to understand the scientific details of how the mind and body retains and traps these painful past experiences. Then the second part was to implement his two guided meditation recordings from his book You Are the Placebo on a daily basis.

See: Dr. Joe Dispenza Introductory Lecture

It took a deep dedication to this new daily process of meditations but it really helped me find my courage and confidence to face the current triggers and take steps to resolve them. When I had my breakthrough it really felt fantastic! I just felt like I was free of some monstrous trap. I was so aware that I felt no emotional charge anymore from the emails! Soon after I discovered the following movie that mirrored my experience.

Colossal (2017)

The science fiction comedy film, Colossal, is about Gloria (Anne Hathaway) who is an out-of-work party girl returning to her hometown and faces the shocking news reports of a giant creature terrorizing Seoul. This bizarre yet funny and engaging movie is a unique cinematic story with great performances by Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis. See movie trailer

If you feel adventurous and want something different in a movie I highly recommend you see Colossal. What I loved most was the revelations of how the bizarre monster situations tie into Gloria’s current problems in a deep, meaningful way. It’s best that I don’t give anymore details but if you want to see a women with adversities transform her life by finding her inner courage then see this asap! And these inspiring themes will give you clues to how you can benefit personally from this film…

Inspiring Themes:
• Courage
• Passion
• Perseverance
• Resilience
• Indestructible Optimism
• Supportive Relationships
• Leadership
• Facing Bullying
• Resolving Childhood Issues
• Female Empowerment

It’s sometimes hard to face unexpected situations that make us feel anxiety and mental pain. And yet they could also be invaluable signs pointing at an opportunity to transform this pain into great learning and awareness. Movie heroes can help inspire you to look at your challenges as a gift for personal growth. Find a film today to help you unleash your innate courage and confidence!

“A woman finding her inner strength is inspiring. But a woman finding her inner giant monster who kicks butt — that’s just so cool.”
Review of Colossal by David Edelstein, Vulture.com

Tip#1040: The Uplifting Power of Cinema, Part 3 - Their Finest

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned from the movies is how anyone can rewrite the script of their life when situations look hopeless. I am currently excited to be exploring bestselling author and lecturer Dr. Joe Dispenza’s methods and teachings for rewriting my debilitating beliefs and transforming subconscious blocks affecting my health and wellness. He appeared in the film What the Bleep Do We Know? and his approach is very scientific and yet spiritual at the same time.

In his books, Breaking The Habit of Being Yourself and You Are the Placebo: Making Your Mind Matter, Dr. Joe provides background information and a road map to positive changes for chronic life and health issues. One of the solutions has to do with going inward via daily, guided meditations.

Since writing has been a passion of mine for many years I see these new meditations as a powerful way of rewriting the script of my life with my inner thoughts and feelings. This may take weeks or months of dedicated daily practice but I will persevere. And I know that movies I am guided to watch will continue to inspire and mirror my inner strengths to keep moving forward. That is part of the uplifting power of cinema!

Tip#1039: Real-Life Heroes in Movies Inspire, Part 5 - Maudie

One of the biggest lessons I learned from my life-altering situation seven years ago this month was learning to live in a back-to-basics home (see tip#400). I now enjoy living with just the essentials and continue to declutter and do spring cleanings. I am currently in the process of clearing my artworks, old clothes, papers, etc. (see tip#1035). My live/work space always feels so much better after I let go of old stuff!

Decluttering my home is also an exercise in self-love and self-empowerment (see tip#1029) which is a big part of my lifestyle changes that has improved my health and wellness. This exercise does require the ability and courage to let go as well as having a creative vision of how you want your home to look like. Thankfully there are great films that can help inspire you on these factors and more!

Maudie (2017)

The drama film, Maudie, is based on a true story about an arthritic Nova Scotia woman named Maud Lewis (Sally Hawkins) working as a housekeeper for Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke) while she hones her skills as an artist. This wonderful, heartfelt movie features outstanding performances by Hawke and especially Hawkins who is truly Oscar worthy.

Sally Hawkins as Maud is absolutely mesmerizing! She projects such a strong leadership quality and playful spirit despite her physical challenges and social awkwardness. And her ability to stand her ground with the volatile Everett is inspiring to watch. She has a strong vision of how to improve his home with her creative talents and perseveres despite his resistance to change or letting go.

Inspiring Themes:
• Having a Vision
• Passion
• Perseverance
• Resilience
Indestructible Optimism
• Supportive Relationships
• Leadership
• Creative Expression
• Art & Painting

Normally I would share a movie trailer link but I highly recommend you see this film without knowing any more details. This is one of the preview films I mentioned in tip#1038 and it was so much better not seeing any footage before hand. So if you are interested in art/painting, Canadian east coast scenery and being inspired by a strong female hero brimming with indestructible optimism then go see this amazing movie today!

Movies can inspire you to look at your home or life challenges with new eyes and give you the vision to make positive changes. Movie heroes can help you find the courage to declutter and let go of whatever is blocking your way. And if these heroes are based on real-life people then they can inspire you to believe anything is possible!

Tip#1038: The Uplifting Power of Cinema, Part 2 - The Zookeeper’s Wife

This was an extraordinary week of reminders for perseverance and the uplifting power of cinema. I had been dealing with depression symptoms for several weeks but suddenly had a wonderful full day of movies that started with an early morning press screening of Tommy’s Honour at the Cineplex Cinemas Varsity. It was followed by a screening of The Zookeeper’s Wife and then an evening sneak preview of Maudie that I saw with a friend.

Throughout the day I felt amazing, happy, alert and inspired! Any debilitating symptoms were gone and I was so aware of how different I felt from the previous days of darkness and withdrawal. I believe it was also the therapeutic action of getting out of my isolated live/work environment and being in a social environment.

All three films were based on true stories and had heroes that inspired and re-energized me with their courage, passion, perseverance and a powerful will to follow what was in their hearts. Cinema, once again, proved to be an excellent, re-vitalizing tonic that I highly recommend!

The Zookeeper’s Wife (2017)

The war, drama film, The Zookeeper’s Wife, is based on the true story of Antonina Zabinski (Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr. Jan Zabinski (Johan Heldenbergh) and how they rescued Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto with their zoo from the invading Nazi. This moving story features extraordinary acts of courage and compassion as well as a fascinating look at the zoo animals during the war. See: movie trailer

Despite the darkness and horrors shown during this time period there were many uplifting scenes featuring Antonina and her love for the animals. Seeing her cuddling lion cubs and hearing her soothing, comforting voice did wonders for my depression symptoms. There is also a powerful scene where Antonina connects with a traumatized little girl through her loving voice and sharing of a bunny rabbit for her to hold.

Inspiring Themes:
• Courage
• Compassion
• Passion
• Perseverance
• Resilience
• Indestructible Optimism
• Supportive Relationships
• Community

Going to a movie theatre allows you to escape your troubles for awhile and be re-energized by the sights and sounds of the film. The movie heroes will also help inspire you to persevere and stay strong with their own success stories of courage. Find a film today that will lift your spirits!

Tip#1037: Surround Yourself With Friends & Allies, Part 2 - Kong: Skull Island

I’m happy to say that all the issues causing the anxiety I mentioned in the last blog post (see tip#1036) have been resolved! Much of it stemmed from fear of the unknown and not knowing how to communicate with people triggering negative thoughts and feelings within me. These are times when having allies are an important part of moving forward with courage when you feel chronically stuck in life or work.

Relationship and Communications Expert, Tammy Cunningham is one of my trusted allies and we’ve been friends and co-workers for years. She is one of my primary go-to resources when I have challenges with work relationships, family or other problems that trigger me to fall back into old victim modes rather than take personal leadership in these adversities.

I recently attended her new weekend workshop called Facilitation Skills for Leaders, Level One without knowing any details because I already knew her programs, like the Mastery of Self Expression, are life changing in unexpected ways! As a highly skilled and intuitive facilitator, Tammy has a kind of superpower for guiding you to recognize and identify root causes of chronic, life long issues triggered by current problems.

The extra benefits from Tammy’s programs are that you can add Tammy to your list of allies and a coach for help and support. And as another benefit you will discover new allies in the other participants you get to know throughout the group exercises of the weekend workshops. This all reminds me of this fantastic African proverb…

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Kong: Skull Island (2017)

The action adventure monster film, Kong: Skull Island, takes place in 1973 where scientists, soldiers and adventurers unite to explore a mythical, uncharted island in the Pacific Ocean where they encounter ancient, giant creatures like the mighty ape Kong. This exhilarating, visually stunning and witty film is a true popcorn movie filled with amazing action scenes, creatures and stars Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman and a hilarious John C. Reilly. See: movie trailer

I knew I had to see this film after seeing the exciting movie trailer! It reminded me of all the monster movies I enjoyed watching growing up on Sunday afternoons on TV and how much fun going to the cinema can be. And while I was entertained the film was sending out an inspirational message about finding allies in unexpected places like Kong himself. Despite Kong’s savage nature the people on the expedition learned that they needed to be allies with this giant ape in order to survive greater threats on the island.

This was a reminder of a lesson learned from Tammy’s workshop that your perceived enemies or antagonists can be a source of great personal learning. They can help teach you compassion, empathy, understanding and even help you break free of chronic blocks and fears.

Be open today to welcoming new allies into your life. And be aware of your current allies and how you can be supportive others around you. Adversities in life and work can seem overwhelming or hopeless and the key to moving forward is to step out of your victim mode and into your personal leadership position. The allies around you will be there to empower your potential!
