Tip#824: Cultivate Supportive Relationships, Part 2 – Bell Let’s Talk Day - Wild Card

On January 28, 2015 I enjoyed participating in Bell Let’s Talk Day posting movie tips for mental health and depression on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. Bell donated 5 cents per message to mental health initiatives and the final total exceeded $6 million meaning that a massive number of individuals were lending their support! The 5 cents also applied to retweets which was also fun to do knowing I was supporting many other people actively sharing their own insights.

The following weekend was then enjoyed at my friend’s cottage/home for another great time with close friends (see: tip#806). My depression symptoms were high on the first day and I really appreciated my friend’s support and understanding when I needed to just lie on a couch and rest. The next day I was feeling like my energetic self and eagerly helped chop firewood for my friend’s home. I felt blessed that I have supportive relationships I could count on.

I was also surprised to see one of my illustration prints hanging on my friend’s cottage/home. It’s been over 10 years since he bought the artwork and it suddenly made me feel so damn good to see it displayed! I viewed this as a lesson in how unexpected actions in the past can come around in such as positive, uplifting way.

Wild Card (2015)

The crime drama film, Wild Card, is about a recovering gambling addict named Nick Wild (Jason Statham) who takes odd jobs in Las Vegas helping people. Usually you get an action flick whenever you see Statham is in it and yet this film is equally a compelling drama with many colourful characters played by Milo Ventimiglia, Stanley Tucci, Hope Davis, Dominik Garcia-Lorido and Michael Angarano. And when the fight scenes happen they are choreographed with so much fun! I highly recommend you do not see any movie trailers as they will spoil the fun.

What inspired me about the film was seeing the kind, supportive relationships Wild had cultivated all over Las Vegas. Whether they were hotel cleaning staff or a waitress at his favourite diner, people were there for Wild even if just for words of encouragement when he was feeling down or overwhelmed with his addictions. There is also an unexpected new friendship that develops with a young man named Cyrus (Michael Angarano) that ends up benefiting one another in an exciting way!

I found that being courteous to anyone I meet has sometimes led to friendship, business leads or to each of us just feeling good for that moment. Opening a door for someone or acknowledging when someone is feeling down can be a huge gift for someone. Be conscious every day that you are cultivating supportive relationships. One day you’ll feel blessed that someone you helped once is unexpectedly there for you in your hour of need!
