Tip#792: The Key to Happiness, Part 2 - Hector and the Search for Happiness

For first time in a long time I was feeling the blues this week. Despite a very successful motivational talk I gave at a major financial corporation several personal situations hit me all at once and I felt very lost. To clear my head I took the Friday off because my photographer friend Derek contacted me who magically had the day off too. So we went on an adventure walking around Toronto in the sunny warm weather.

He took me to his favourite restaurant The Lakeview for lunch where I had fish n chips upgraded to decadent poutine with sweet potatoes, bacon bits and peameal bacon. And then we went to La Paloma Gelateria & Cafe for the most incredible chocolate hazelnut gelato I’ve ever had! Derek just shared some of the foods that made him happy and that happiness ever so slowly transformed the blues I was feeling into a brighter colour.

Hector and the Search for Happiness (2014)

The romantic comedy drama film, Hector and the Search for Happiness, is about a psychiatrist named Hector (Simon Pegg) who decides to travel around the world to research for the secret to happiness. At first he does this to help his clients be more happy but soon discovers it is he who needs to know the keys especially in regards to his girlfriend Clara (Rosamund Pike). There are many beautiful locations Hector travels to like China and Africa encounter characters played wonderfully by Stellan Skarsgard, Jean Reno, Toni Collette, Christopher Plummer and more. See movie trailer

Lesson 2- Happiness often comes when least expected.
Lesson 14- Happiness is to be loved for EXACTLY who you are.
Lesson 16- Happiness is knowing how to celebrate.

This film is overflowing with insights about happiness that Hector writes down in his notebook. And though these are his personal keys many can be applied to your own life. Plus there are thought-provoking ideas about the unconscious filters we put on ourselves that block happiness. Overall this film is rich with tips on happiness and helped me shed some tears that needed to be released about my own personal challenges. Seeing this film the day after my day adventure was so synchronistic and it helped lift my spirits up even higher.

I highly recommend this movie to lift you up if you are feeling blue. It is a powerful movie prescription you can give yourself if you are drawn to seeing it!

Tip#791: Be Inspired by Amazing True Stories, Part 3 - Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story

I’ve been so excited for meeting so many movie lovers across the planet because of my social media project on Facebook and Pinterest called “Inspiring Film Recommendations from Movie Lovers Around the World”. They are all from different cultures, professions and age groups and yet share a common theme in that a film helped inspire them in a very meaningful way. See: social media project

Also when I needed to connect with movie lovers in different countries my friends on Facebook were quick to connect me with their friends. One of my friend’s husband put a shout out on his Facebook wall and tagged specific contacts. Then one of those friends in the Philippines responded and that’s how I learned about this latest movie starring Cuba Gooding Jr. I was so intrigued by how this film inspired this woman in the Philippines that I had to watch it right away. It’s now a favourite, uplifting movie I am excited to recommend!

Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story (2009)

The drama film, Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, is based on the true life story of world-renowned neurosurgeon Ben Carson (Cuba Gooding Jr.). The movie shows his childhood struggles learning at school and how his loving mother encouraged him to be the best he could be. You will also see how brilliant he was when asked to do an almost impossible operation of disjoining newborn twins attached at the head. See: movie trailer

This is one of those films that while watching it I felt so inspired that I knew I needed to watch it over and over again. There are many inspirational and motivational themes for young and old in this movie. I highly recommend this to any parent wanting to encourage their children to be the best they can be in life. And for those who need inspiration for work or in life by an amazing true story this film is for you!

Inspiring Themes:
• Focus
• Perseverance
• Resilience

Tip#790: Expand Your Mind with Science Fiction, Part 5 - Frequencies

For over a decade I’ve been researching and applying personal development tools like NLP (neural linguistic programming) and the law of attraction. I’ve had so many profound results that my life, at times, feels like an exciting Sci Fi fantasy film! Whether it is looking for specific items of clothing, work-related needs or seeking help for various problems I know that having a clear vision and written goals for repetitive verbal affirmations has led to solutions. Spoken words have vibrations.

Understanding vibrational frequencies expanded my mind especially in becoming more aware of the positive and negative thoughts and words I say about myself and others. It’s led me to understanding why music and lyrics amazing affects on my mood and well being. I’ve also learned that the heart is very connected to the brain as The Institute of HeartMath has been researching for over 20 years. Check out the cool computer graphics of the heart and mind connection in the video on their website. These ideas are explored in a fascinating science fiction movie that will expand your mind!

Frequencies (OXV: The Manual) (2013)

The science fiction romantic drama film, Frequencies, is about a parallel world where two gifted children, Marie and Zak, are seen at different ages learning about love and how physics can determine the laws of attraction. What they discover is how the vibration of words can affect people’s actions and thinking. This may be the most scientific love story you will ever see! See: movie trailer

The film also explores what it is to be different or unique. It also theorizes on the power of music on our hearts and minds. And when it comes to love this story brings up many thought-provoking concepts. Frequencies is a brilliant Low-fi Sci Fi film with intriguing ideas about thoughts, words and love that will wriggle its way into your brain and your heart! I highly recommend for a unique cinematic experience!

Tip#789: Expand Your Mind with Science Fiction, Part 4 – Coherence

Once in awhile a movie comes along that excites me so much that I want to immediately host movie screenings and have vibrant discussions of this new cinematic experience! These movies entertain and then have me thinking long afterwards to look at the world in a new way. I believe these movies can help shake up your mindset with thought-provoking concepts. This latest film reminded me of the low budget brilliance of the movie Primer and how I was compelled to watch it again and again!

Coherence (2013)

The science fiction drama film, Coherence, is about eight friends at a dinner party experiencing bizarre, reality twisting events on the night of a visiting comet. That’s all you need to know if you want to experience a fantastic “Twilight Zone” like story that will make you want to immediately watch over and over again. This is a riveting mystery story where you must pay attention to everything happening in every scene. I highly recommend you don’t see any movie trailers except this short clip: movie teaser

Coherence is one of the most creative & riveting micro budget Sci Fi films I’ve ever seen. The making of the film is equally incredible and innovative. It was shot over five nights in the director’s home with just existing lighting. And there’s much more to this story. It’s best you see the film first and then read these fascinating interviews with writer director James Ward Byrkit…

• How James Ward Byrkit constructed Coherence
• Interview: James Ward Byrkit of “Coherence”
• A Super-Spoilery Interview With the Director of 'Coherence,' the Twistiest Movie of the Year

There are so many surprises in this film and best that you see without knowing anymore. This film offers a unique, entertaining way of expanding your mind and look at life in a new perspective. This is when solutions can be discovered for adversities and challenges you keep facing in life or at work. I highly recommend you treat your mind to a stimulating cinematic experience!

Tip#788: Important Reminders from Movies – The Giver

I recently had the honour to be invited to a business meeting with Chairman & CEO of the Dubai International Film Festival, Abdulhamid Juma during TIFF 2014. He loved my new community building social media project on Facebook & Pinterest called "Inspiring Film Recommendations from Movie Lovers Around the World".

I showed him samples of the graphics and explained how each personal story gets people on Facebook interactive and connecting with other film fans around the world. He paid me a fantastic compliment saying “This could be the next twitter.”!

I believe all good ideas inspire someone because of some emotional connection being made. And movies can be filled with many thought-provoking concepts about life that they contain answers to questions you may be needing right now. Films like Pleasantville and The Matrix are fantastic films about awakening to your true potential and uniqueness and now there is a movie that embodies qualities of both these stories.

The Giver (2014)

The science fiction film, The Giver, is set in an emotionally sterile society in the year 2048 after a big war where a young man named Jonas (Brenon Thwaites) has memories transferred to him by his mentor the Giver (Jeff Bridges) of how people use to be. Ideas of living passionate lives and of self-expression are shown through these vivid transfers and through Jonas you see our current world through new eyes. See: movie trailer

Inspiring Themes:
• Passion
• Resilience
• Perseverance
• Courage
• Leadership
• Mentorship
• Self-awareness
• Self-expression

At first I felt I was watching a carbon copy of The Hunger Games and Divergence but once I saw how Jonas received memories from the Giver I was fully intrigued. These transfers would later escalate into wondrous, uplifting moments I wished would have been much longer! This film has already been called a Sci Fi Pleasantville and though its ideas have been seen before they can still remind you of key important factors about living a joyful, satisfying life and career.

“Memories are not just about the past - they determine our future. They can change things. You can make things better.”

“Have faith the Giver told me. He said faith - that was seeing beyond. He compared it to the wind, something felt but not seen.”

Tip#787: Find Confidence in Who You Are – IMAX Preview Screening at TIFF’14 - The Equalizer

I was very excited to receive tickets to the IMAX preview screening of Denzel Washington’s film The Equalizer at The Toronto International Film Festival recently! We lined up 90 minutes in the hot sun prior to the start time and it just added to the buzz and electric energy of being at the film festival. This was a special screening so IMAX treated each and every one of us to free popcorn, drinks and a promotional T-Shirt! See: photos

This year I’ve been doing more and more photographing of events like this one because it is a passion to share my experiences with others. Also it is who I am. I loved photography so much in high school that I became editor-in-chief of the yearbook for 2 years! What I loved was taking photos of all the different groups at school, designing the pages and writing the text to tell a story of this time in our lives. Ultimately it was about bringing a sense of community through the year book that would hold warm memories for a lifetime.

These interests of mine have evolved into my latest social media project called “Inspiring Film Recommendations from Movie Lovers Around the World”. See more in tip#785. I just know I was born to inspire others and help build community, team spirit and teamwork. Synchronistically, there was a quote at the beginning of The Equalizer that mirrored my confidence in my passion projects…

“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” Mark Twain

The Equalizer (2014)

The action thriller film, The Equalizer, is based on the television series about a solitary, quiet man named Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) who slowly reveals he is so much more than he appears. Without telling anymore of the plot I can say that I saw this film not knowing anything except it was the same director as Training Day and expected intense violence. And though there are graphic scenes the movie blew me away with how exciting and inspiring McCall was as a new movie hero. And as a cinematic role model for resilience, perseverance, confidence, wisdom, resourcefulness, leadership and altruism.

Inspiring Themes:
• Resilience
• Perseverance
• Indestructible Optimism
• Confidence
• Wisdom
• Resourcefulness
• Strategic Thinking
• Leadership
• Self-awareness
• Altruism

McCall is all about doing the right thing and helping others being bullied and victimized. And his confidence in who he is, his skill sets and expertise is so strong it oozes out in every scene he is in. He radiates confidence and just knows why he was born. If you can handle some graphic violence you will discover many inspirational and motivational insights from The Equalizer. There may be a movie message you’ll receive to help you find your own confidence in who you are!
