Tip#529: Be Open to Evolving – Johnny Depp – 21 Jump Street

I grew up enjoying the TV show 21 Jump Street in the late 80's. Little did I know that it's star, Johnny Depp, would evolve into a megastar and a chameleon of an actor! For over 2 decades Depp has created many memorable characters in films such as: Edward Scissorhands, Chocolat, Pirates of the Caribbean, Alice in Wonderland, Rango and on and on and on!

Depp just keeps evolving his screen personas. And I found that I had to evolve my own sense of thinking when I saw the trailer of the new 21 Jump Street movie. The trailer looked nothing like the TV show I knew and loved. It looked like a complete reboot or a re-imagining because it seemed like a raunchy comedy. But I kept an open mind and saw it and I was surprised to be treated on many levels! See: movie trailer

21 Jump Street 2012

The action comedy 21 Jump Street is a loose sequel to the 1987 TV series of the same name. Morton Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Greg Jenko (Channing Tatum) first meet in high school and later attend police academy together. They are then reassigned undercover into a high school through a special division called 21 Jump Street.

The film is a hilarious departure from the tone of the original series with very engaging performances from the leads. There are even some nice life lessons that shine through for Schmidt and Jenko both personally and as friends. And yes there are cameos from the original TV series including Johnny Depp. His cameo is so fun and clever that it's best you see the film as soon as possible before anyone else blows the surprise!

Sometimes change is uncomfortable. That's why it's best to have an open mind and allow your thinking to be flexible. The world continually evolves whether you want it or not in our culture, technology, social media and even how stories are told. Be open to evolving and you will truly benefit from what you learn and discover!

Tip#528: Articulate Your Best To Others – The Hunger Games

I first heard about The Hunger Games book in 2010 through Shawne Duperon, a Six-time EMMY award winning producer and Media Expert (Read more in tip#406). I was attending her empowering Media Mastery Bootcamp in the US where we discovered we shared a big passion for movies. Since then we've been in regular contact discussing favourite films via Facebook! I found a new movie buddy!

I saw The Hunger Games film on opening weekend and was excited to discover there were many scenes with the main characters about how to interact with the media. They were being coached constantly on how to answer questions confidently with interviewers and how to create a memorable, heartfelt brand for the audiences watching them. It's as if you get a behind the scenes view of what American Idol is like for contestants and what Shawne does in her media and networking training!

The Hunger Games 2012

The science fiction movie The Hunger Games is based on the popular novel where youths between ages 12 to 18 are recruited from different districts for televised battles-to-the-death. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) end up representing their district and, though scared, quickly find allies in their mentor Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) and stylist Cinna (Lenny Kravitz).

Together, Haymitch and Cinna coach Katniss and Peeta on successfully interacting with the media, specifically TV talk show host Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci). By following their advice Katniss and Peeta clearly communicate their inner strengths, their unique personalities AND ultimately get audiences to root for their success in the games. Before her first interview Katniss was nervous but Cinna encouraged her and said, "Just be yourself". She did and the interviewer AND live audience loved her.

Katniss: "So you're here to make me look pretty."
Cinna: "I'm here to help you make an impression."

If you are ever interviewed on a radio or TV show or by any other media, use this movie or Shawn Duperon's expertise as resources to help you be the best you can be. Remember that interacting with the media is just another level of building meaningful relationships and allies in whatever service or message you are communicating. You just need to articulate yourself clearly and from your heart.

Tip#527: There Are Heroes Around You, Part 2 - Gandhi

I have 3 friends that have been on my mind recently because of their incredible resilience, courage and strength. They have been inspiring me with the challenges they've endured or are enduring now. One is my friend and business coach Patrick Bizandavyi who was able to stay positive during the killings in his hometown Burundi during the times of the Hotel Rwanda film. Read more in tip#523

The other is Robin Noble, travel and wellness consultant of Noble Destinations. She had survived a devastating car accident years ago and shattered many bones throughout her body and face. After a long journey she successfully learned how to walk and talk again.

And then there's Lynn Manwar whom I featured in Part 1 for overcoming many health challenges over the years like thyroid cancer (read more in tip#361). Recently she's been showing great courage during more chemotherapy. Her positive energy in her voice is very inspiring and she is documenting her journey and wellness tips on Facebook and her blog called Wellness Detective. See blog: click here

Gandhi 1982

The biographical film Gandhi is based on the life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Ben Kingsley) who led the nonviolent resistance movement against British colonial rule in India. Through many years Gandhi demonstrated many great leadership qualities such as courage, focus, optimism, passion, perseverance, resilience and vision.

Gandhi had a vision for a better world and never gave up despite all the years of adversity he faced. Even during his hunger strikes he believed that by being a living example he could help transform the negative mindsets of his own people. Gandhi was a true hero whose legacy of strength continues to inspire through this movie and his actions while alive.

Be inspired by movie heroes and real-life heroes already around you. Listen to stories of someone you know who has faced adversity with courage. Listen to the keys that helped them persevere and maintain their optimism. Their stories are there to mirror your own potential for greatness. Be open to your greatness!

Tip#526: Movies To Wake You Up – Dr. Seuss' The Lorax

"Unless someone like you cares a whole lot, nothing is going to get better, it's not."
Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax (2012)

Four days ago I wrote (in tip#525) about the KONY 2012 video that has been viral online and increasing awareness around the world about the help African children need. The views on Youtube has increased to over 81,900,00. So in four days 4 million more people are now conscious about a very important issue.

Recently I went to see a matinee screening of Dr. Seuss' The Lorax and in the front row were a group of young kids talking consistently throughout the film. Instead of being irritated I was actually amazed to hear them identifying the important issues the story was bringing up. For example they were eager to point out the villains chopping down trees and destroying nature. This movie was helping young children wake up to critical issues on our planet!

Dr. Seuss' The Lorax (2012)

The animated movie The Lorax is based on Dr. Seuss' story of a 12 year old boy Ted (Zac Efron) searching to find a real tree in a town where non exists. He meets The Once-ler (Ed Helms) who tells Ted his story of how, as a young businessman, destroyed an entire land of trees in order to make products he sold called the Thneed. The Lorax (Danny DeVito) appears at the start of the destruction and "speaks for the trees" pleading to the Once-ler to stop his actions. See: movie trailer

The story is a fable about the danger corporate greed has on nature and our environment. Through colourful, whimsical characters and catchy songs this film entertains AND educates audiences of harsh realities we face in our economy and our natural resources. This movie can help children learn about the world they are living in and hopefully become passionate about making positive changes.

Movies have the power to wake us up to important messages about our selves and our world. Let yourself be moved by these films and, if your passion is stirred, take some action for positive change. Whatever age you are you can make a difference! And once you’ve woken to a meaningful cause do your best not to ever shut your eyes again!

Tip#525: The Power of Youtube – KONY 2012 Video – Machine Gun Preacher

Here's another incredible synchronicity, in the first week of March I was compelled to watch Machine Gun Preacher based on true story of a man rescuing African children abducted and turned into soldiers. Within a few days a friend sends me the KONY 2012 video all about the same subject! I knew deep inside this must mean something immensely important.

Firstly, the movie and the KONY 2012 video is bringing awareness to the horrors happening to children in Africa so help can come on a global level. Secondly, the video on Youtube had reached over 77,900.000 views in just 9 days which demonstrates the power of social media as a hyper fast method of sending a message to the world. The video immediately caught Oprah’s attention who quickly spread the news on her Twitter profile with over 9,800,000 followers.

Also the real machine gun preacher, Sam Childers, immediately responded to the KONY 2012 video to clarify who else needs to be stopped in Africa. Read more: click here

Machine Gun Preacher (2011)

The movie Machine Gun Preacher is based on the true story of Sam Childers (Gerard Butler) who goes through a religious transformation and discovers a calling to help children in Africa being abducted and forced into becoming soldiers. You see how a man's passion and purpose can produce life-saving results like building an orphanage for African children who have lost their homes and families.

Childers continues his fight to this day demonstrating great courage, perseverance and passion in his cause to help a suffering nation. This movie helped me become aware of the dire situations happening on the other side of the globe. I am grateful for movies like this AND Youtube for helping me learn more about our world and how we can all be part of a community that helps one another.

Be inspired by movies based on true stories to help you envision what you can transform or change in your life. Recognize the power of Youtube and how it can help educate and bring awareness to subjects you may care deeply about. And when you see evidence of how videos and movies can help bring about a sense of community you can become a meaningful part of a GLOBAL community for change.

Tip#524: Where Does Your Drive Come From? – John Carter

On Thursday and Friday I experienced an unusual surge of energy and was extremely productive like I used to be in my first business as an illustrator. I hadn't done anything out of the ordinary to increase my drive so I liked to believe it came from the full moon on Thursday or the high solar flare activity in the news that same day.

Whatever is fueling my drive I welcomed it! I actually loved stirring my imagination that the solar flare activity was sending solar storms to Earth to energize my body and mind. I imagined I was a battery and the sun was recharging me on such a high level! And the photos I've seen of the solar flares are amazing. See more on current increase of solar flares and photos: Click here

John Carter (2012)

The science fiction movie John Carter is based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs series of novels about a former American Civil War captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) who is mysteriously transported to Mars known as Barsoom by the inhabitants. Carter encounters all kinds of exotic species and cultures and discovers he has increased strength and the ability to jump extreme distances. See: movie trailer

Seeing Carter use his new jumping powers was so much fun. This movie magically transported me as well to an entertaining world for 2 hours. There's also a romantic story here! And though this film reminded a lot of Star Wars and Avatar I knew it was because the John Carter books inspired these movies in the first place. James Cameron, who wrote and directed Avatar, has said his film was inspired by Burroughs' John Carter books. His drive came from stories written 100 years ago!

Passion for movies, books or even a dream or goal can fuel one's drive AND positive emotional energy. What drives you? Where does your drive come from? Identifying the source can help you remember key resources that can increase your drive when you feel lost or stuck. Remember your resources and then you'll recharge your batteries and move forward with enthusiasm AND confidence!

Tip#523: Personal Leadership, Part 1 - Hotel Rwanda

My friend and business coach, Patrick Bizindavyi recently shocked me when he said that the movie Hotel Rwanda was nothing to what really happened. Patrick was in his early 20's when the Rwandan genocide happened in 1994 and though he lived in Burundi he was surrounded by killings happening regularly for years. He lost family members, friends and classmates.

Patrick said it was hard to stay positive but he took key steps for staying strong and resilient. One key was not to listen to the horrifying daily news reports once and for all. He then focused on his passion which was playing basketball and coaching other teams. He also focused on having a better life and career. In 2002 Patrick came to Toronto and is now President of Goal Achievers Canada. Like the real-life hero in Hotel Rwanda, Patrick demonstrated outstanding personal leadership.

Author of Building Personal Leadership, Joe Farcht defines personal leadership as the ability and desire to crystallize your thinking and to establish a specific direction and destination for your own life. And author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey says personal leadership is the process of keeping your vision and values before you and aligning your life to be congruent with them.

Hotel Rwanda 2004

The film Hotel Rwanda is base on true events of hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina (Don Cheadle) saving the lives of over a thousand people during the Rwandan genocide. Faced with an overwhelming crisis, Paul chooses to use his skills as a businessman and his love of family to house refugees in his upper class hotel in Kigali Rwanda.

Despite facing horrors on a daily basis Paul maintains his focus and resilience to keep as many people alive. He kept his vision and values before him and persevered. Paul demonstrated leadership qualities that could inspire anyone to face their own challenges with courage, confidence and a strong will to move forward.

Be empowered by true stories like Paul and Patrick. Let their choices inspire you to take positive actions in the challenges of your own life, career or business. Make it a daily practice to hone your personal leadership skills and mindset. Always remember you have the power to overcome anything!

Tip#522: See Things in a New Light – Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

My friend and photographer Derek Lang just worked with actors Jeff Bridges, Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Bacon on the set of the 2013 movie R.I.P.D. filmed in Boston. What inspired me most were his stories of what these stars are like in real-life. For example he said that Bridges was super nice to him and they both took pictures of each other as if they were just pals goofing around.

It was cool to hear about an Oscar winning actor like Jeff Bridges in a down-to-earth way. Derek shared his stories as we caught up after enjoying the 3D movie Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. We both laughed out loud because it was fun seeing actors Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine and Luis Guzman throwing insults at one another. Johnson is more famous as an action hero so seeing him in a different light was hilarious. See him "pop his pecs" in the trailer: click here

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012)

The 3D family film Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a sequel loosely based on the Jules Verne novel, The Mysterious Island. Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) discovers a coded transmission that leads him and his stepfather Hank Parsons (Dwayne Johnson) to a fantastic island where the sizes of animals and insects are reversed e.g. elephants are small enough to pick up and bumble bees are big enough to ride

What is really interesting is how Hank is able to help decode the transmission. He is actually a trained code breaker and discovers that the location of the island is in 3 different maps from 3 different books: Treasure Island, Gulliver's Travels and Verne's Mysterious Island. Hank is able to see things in a different light, solve a puzzle and find the answers Sean was seeking. Together they then have an incredible adventure!

Seeing things in a new light is about stepping back and seeing situations from a different perspective. Getting fresh eyes from someone else's experiences and skill sets can also help. Solving a mystery doesn't have to be stressful as long as you have a mindset to enjoy the journey. Have fun finding the solutions you seek today!
