Tip#1019: The Uplifting Power of Nostalgia, Part 5 – E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

It feels like cinematic soundtracks these days are not as memorable as when I grew up as a kid in the 70’s and 80’s. Ask anyone and most people could probably hum the theme of Star Wars, E.T. and the Indiana Jones series. But ask someone to hum a tune from any Marvel film like Iron Man, Captain America and it’s not possible. Though maybe someone could hum The Avengers or X-Men theme.

Check out this fascinating video feature: Why You (Actually) Don't Remember Marvel Music

Film soundtracks like Star Wars and other memorable themes I mentioned happen to be created by legendary composer John Williams. They are melodic, transcendent and instantly trigger happy nostalgic memories! I collected his music albums and his amazing work was an important part of my childhood.

I recently had the pleasure of experiencing a special screening of E.T. with a live concert at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts during the holidays and it was absolutely fantastic! It began with a pre-show discussion with Toronto Film Critics and TV show hosts Richard Crouse and Thom Ernst. My mom was in town so I was thrilled to take her and she and I enjoyed the pre-show and the screening.

When the orchestra played E.T.’s theme the whole theatre filled with this nostalgic energy and happiness. I could feel my heart swell and glow as bright as E.T.’s own heart light! All of a sudden I was feeling like my eternally happy child where everything was right and good and perfect in the world!

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

The science fiction fantasy film, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, is about a young boy named Elliott (Henry Thomas) who befriends a gentle alien left stranded on Earth. This wonderful, magical story features many humorous and emotional scenes by Elliott’s family especially his little sister Gertie (Drew Barrymore) and E.T. himself! See: movie trailer

This enduring classic must be seen by anyone at any age. There are many uplifting themes and life lessons like courage, isolation, friendship, family and love. Steven Spielberg did an outstanding job and I’ll always remember the first time I saw the film in 1982. I knew I was watching an instant classic. And what elevated everything I saw on screen was the beautiful, soul-stirring music of John Williams.

Whenever you are feeling down, lost or alone you can treat yourself and watch a movie you loved as a kid. Let the images, characters and music trigger happy, nostalgic feelings and lift your spirits sky high! Feel these feel-good feelings today through the magic of cinema!
