Tip#1007: Have a Good Cry at the Movies, Part 4 - Manchester by the Sea

About two weeks ago I saw a preview screening of Manchester by the Sea courtesy of The Spoke Club and Mongrel Media and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. It made me think about the unexpected loss of my dad at Christmas and the enduring love and support of family. At the same time the film reminded me of the healing power of laughter and crying.

I could identify with lead actor Casey Affleck who gave a stunning performance as a man dealing with overwhelming grief and emotional pain. He demonstrated what it is like to have trapped emotions. That’s why I believe movie heroes can be mirrors for each of us who have shared similar life experiences. And Affleck’s character became a unique cinematic role model because despite his inability to fully heal he shows amazing adaptability and resilience.

Manchester by the Sea (2016)

The drama film, Manchester by the Sea, is about Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) needing to become the sole guardian for his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges) while dealing with his own traumas and loss. This film mixes difficult, emotional moments with unexpected humor and features stellar performances by Affleck, Hedges and the rest of the cast that include a superb Michelle Williams as Lee’s ex-wife. The themes of loss are heavy and tearful in this film. And yet it was surprising to have unexpected scenes and characters injecting humor into the moments. There are also scenes dealing with mental illness with an amazing performance at a dining table by Gretchen Mol that’s both uncomfortable to watch yet riveting. That’s why this film stands out and is memorable because of the brilliant mix of emotions throughout the story.
