Tip#825: Resilience Resources, Part 10 – Mental Health & Healthcare - Big Hero 6

Over the past year the topic of mental health and healthcare have been top of my mind not just for my life and work but to better help others close to me. I’ve also studied the importance of balanced neurotransmitters for proper brain and body function. That’s why it stunned me recently to finally see the Disney film Big Hero 6 that explores these themes. It excited me to know that kids, as well as adults, would be introduced to concepts that would benefit their understanding of their health and the well being of others. Big Hero 6 (2014)

The computer-animated superhero action comedy film, Big Hero Six, is about a 14-year-old robotics prodigy named Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter) who forms a superhero team to fight a masked villain in the futuristic city of San Fransokyo. With highly entertaining characters, exciting, colourful visuals this film also has many life lessons and touching emotional moments. See: movie trailer

“Shake things up! Use that big brain of yours to think your way out. Look for a new angle.” 

The marketing for Big Hero 6 focused more on the character of Baymax (Scott Adsit) as a cute cuddly inflatable robotic character but he is much more. Baymax was invented to be a personal healthcare companion. And when he sees Hiro in emotional pain from a death in the family he wants to help. Whether it comes across as humorous or clinical, when Baymax speaks he actually shares important tips for helping someone with their mental, emotional and physical health. Even the power of a warm hug is demonstrated constantly. Science already shows that a hug releases the hormone oxytocin into our bodies lowering levels of stress hormones. Read: hug health benefits

Teamwork and leadership are also part of the many other themes in the film that could inspire you to be more productive in the workplace and in life.

Ultimately these movies can help you better understand how you can help someone heal and feel better.
