Tip#785: Recommendations from Movie Lovers Around the World – Social Media Project - After the Wedding

I recently launched an exciting social media project on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter called “Recommendations from Movie Lovers Around the World”. It’s about movie lovers around the globe sharing their favourite movies that inspired them and details of why. Some of the stories are very personal and so very inspiring for anyone to read! This project was designed to help someone going through difficult times who may discover a film that will lift them up and give them hope to keep going.

One of the submissions from recording artist and songwriter, Melissa Rebronja from Los Angeles, USA was a film called After the Wedding. I ended up seeing it the day I found out Robin Williams had died and the movie’s theme of cherishing relationships comforted me after the shock of one of my favourite actors passing. This was exactly what I hope the project will do for someone needing a movie to re-energize their spirit in the same way movies had saved my life over and over during the adversities I've faced.

After the Wedding (2006)

The Danish drama film, After the Wedding, is about a manager (Mads Mikkelsen) of an orphanage in India sent to Copenhagen, Denmark where he discovers a life-changing family secret. It’s best that you don’t know anymore to discover the twists of the story for yourself. This film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film and features many heartfelt, emotional performances. See: movie trailer

“Every acquaintance, every friend, every person who has a place in your heart, it is the time with them that really means something. Nothing else matters.”

The quote above from the movie summarizes the cinematic comfort I received when seeing this movie. And this movie only came to my attention from another movie lover who wanted to share this meaningful film with me and my social media project. It excites me deeply knowing that someone somewhere may see Melissa’s film recommendation (and others in the project) and help them through a challenge they are facing. The inspirational power of movies is unlimited!

Tip#784: Toronto in the Movies - The F Word (What If)

I love living in Toronto! It’s a great movie and food town and those are my greatest passions. Plus most of my friends and family are here to share these passions with! The summer is alive with food festivals like Taste of the Danforth in Greek town and Festival of South Asia in Little India. And we have so many delicious multicultural restaurants to choose from! I also recently checked out the Scotiabank Buskerfest along Yonge St. with exciting street performers.

Many movies have been filmed in Toronto doubling in for other city locations such as A Christmas Story, The Black Stallion, Good Will Hunting, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Kick Ass, X-Men, The Incredible Hulk and Cinderella Man. Then there’s films that take place in Toronto like Scott Pilgrim vs the World. And now we have a romantic comedy starring a famous boy wizard celebrating the great city of Toronto!

See fantastic website with images of movies and TV shows filmed in Toronto: Reel Toronto

The F Word (What If?) (2014)

The romantic comedy film, The F Word (What If), is about Wallace (Daniel Radcliffe) who meets Chantry (Zoe Kazan) who has a long-term boyfriend but decides to have a friendship with her. The chemistry is electric between the two and the film is filled with witty, fast-paced dialogue and quirky characters. One of the characters just happens to be the city Toronto which is celebrated in almost every location scene! See: movie trailer

A specific food is also an important factor between Wallace and Chandry so this adds to the fun and magic of their special relationship. The only issue I have about this movie is the decision to release the movie in Canada as “The F Word” and it being called “What If” in the US and UK! Whatever this entertaining romcom is called where you live I highly recommend you check it out. You’ll also see how beautiful my city is!

Tip#783: Indulge In A Guilty Pleasure, Part 2 – Adam Sandler – Blended

Wow! Some film critics can be brutal with their reviews of Adam Sandler films! I just read some on wikipedia for Blended and they were extremely negative. When I saw the movie a part of my brain agreed and was saying “this is so stupid, why am I watching this?” but the rest of me was indulging in the silly scenes and crazy characters and made me laugh out loud. I've seen it twice now and for some strange reason Sandler’s films get better and better on repeat screenings. So yes I’m a big fan as I’ve written in previous posts! See: tip#58

Blended (2014)

The romantic comedy film, Blended, is about two single parents Jim (Adam Sandler) and Lauren (Drew Barrymore) and their kids getting stuck at a family resort in Africa after a bad blind date. You don’t need to know anymore of the plot because you're really interested in the crazy, crude jokes, kooky characters (Terry Crews is hilarious) and embarrassing situations! See: movie trailer

What always surprises me are the little heartwarming moments that happen in a Sandler film. It may seem corny but these moments feel good just like in Sandler and Barrymore’s other films together The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates. In Blended the theme of antagonistic families coming together led to many unexpected acts of kindness. You see positive change transform the previous problems between the lead characters as well as each other's kids.

So if you want to indulge in a guilty pleasure of an Adam Sandler film to make you laugh and have moments to touch your heart I highly recommend Blended. Or if you have other movies you secretly love then indulge in those today!

Tip#782: Top 5 Inspiring Movies starring Robin Williams

One of my favourite TV shows growing up was Mork & Mindy starring a new comedian/actor named Robin Williams. He just made me laugh and I instantly loved him! As the years went by he grew into a respected Hollywood actor making films that would help save my life during numerous adversities. His movies will be part of his massive legacy long after his unexpected death on August 11, 2014. I will always be grateful for how he touched my life.

Williams has done many fantastic movies and I have favourites that are meaningful to me. Here are my top 5 inspiring movies with Robin Williams and motivating quotes his characters shared. I’ve enjoyed these over and over again both as entertainment and invaluable resources of motivation. I hope they help lift you up during difficult times in your work and life.

Awakenings (1990)

Based on a true story, Williams plays Oliver Sacks a neurologist that discovers a temporary cure of bringing back catatonic people seemingly frozen for decades. This movie always reminds me of the importance of friendship, social support and for appreciating every moment and pleasures of living.

“The human spirit is more powerful than any drug - and THAT is what needs to be nourished: with work, play, friendship, family. These are the things that matter. This is what we've forgotten - the simplest things.”

Bicentennial Man (1999)

In this science fiction film, Williams plays Andrew an android who desires to improve himself and help make the world a better place. The story spans 200 years and always inspires me because of Andrew’s perseverance for personal development, productivity and creative innovation. He achieved his goals no matter how long it took or adversities he faced.

“I try to make sense of things. Which is why, I guess, I believe in destiny. There must be a reason that I am as I am. There must be.”

Good Will Hunting (1997)

In this Oscar winning drama, Williams plays Dr. Sean Maguire who helps a genius-level young adult to overcome his personal issues and pain. This movie inspires me because of how Dr. Maguire and his personal issues were also healed while helping others and that life-changing friendships can happen in unexpected places.

"Real loss is only possible when you love something more than you love yourself."

"You'll have bad times, but it'll always wake you up to the good stuff you weren't paying attention to."

Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)

This comedy is about an out of work actor named Daniel Hillard, played by Williams, who transforms into an elderly woman named Mrs. Doubtfire in order to get an acting job. This movie inspires me to always think big and creatively when it comes to my own work and business. It also reminds me that family, in any form, is important to always have in life.

“If there’s love, dear… those are the ties that bind, and you’ll have a family in your heart, forever.”

Patch Adams (1998)

Based on a true story, Williams plays Patch Adams, a doctor who focused on bringing laughter to patients. This film inspires me to always persevere with my passions and goals despite other people not supporting me. It reminds to also laugh especially when things look dark or hopeless.

"You treat a disease, you win, you lose. You treat a person, I'll guarantee you'll win."

"Death. To die. To expire. To pass on. To perish. To peg out. To push up daisies. To push up posies. To become extinct. Curtains, deceased, Demised, departed And defunct. Dead as a doornail. Dead as a herring. Dead as a mutton. Dead as nits. The last breath. Paying a debt to nature. The big sleep. God's way of saying, "Slow down." "

Quotes from other Robin Williams movies:

"What do you want to be in the world? I mean the whole world. What do you want to be? Close your eyes and think about that."
August Rush (2007)

"I used to think the worst thing in life was to end up all alone. It's not. The worst thing in life is ending up with people who make you feel all alone."
World’s Greatest Dad (2009)

Tip#781: Cultivate Community, Part 9 - The Hundred-Foot Journey

This movie blog was originally supposed to be about my two top passions film and food. I love how both can activate so many positive memories, emotions and pleasures for the senses! I also love how films and food can bring people together to create a sense of community and family. That’s why when I get to write about movies about food it is the ultimate blogging joy!

The food festival Taste of the Danforth is currently on this weekend here in Toronto and we are having perfect hot sunny weather. When it first started in 1993 it was predominantly Greek food but over the years this Greek neighborhood has grown in its multiculturalism. So restaurants serving Thai, Chinese, East Indian and more have made this annual event a tasty, vibrant multicultural experience drawing in thousands of food lovers!

The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014)

The comedy drama film, The Hundred-Foot Journey, is about two different restaurants, French cuisine and Indian cuisine, within hundred feet of each other fighting with one another. It is also about how the power of food can bring people with differences together in love and respect. There are also romantic stories that add to the already tasty story and glorious scenes of delicious foods being prepared and served! The director Lasse Hallström also directed another popular foodie movie Chocolat. See: movie trailer

This film is almost fantasy like with its magical, lush scenery in the south of France. The soundtrack fusion of French and Indian tunes are also fantastic! Adding to all that are many inspiring life lessons and themes. Ultimately the beauty of the film is witnessing the bonding power of food across difference cultures and how trying something new can make you a better person! I highly recommend this movie to feed your senses, spirit and soul!
