Tip#776: Getting through Dark Times & into the Light - Snowpiercer

I may have to create a new category of the films I have mixed feelings about that are still a must-see for important life lessons, thought-provoking concepts or just to shake up your mindset! Suckerpunch, The Congress and Under the Skin are other films I’ve recommended but were a challenge to watch.

The latest movie I am featuring shows people in extremely difficult living conditions who do what they can to survive and then take action to have a better life. The movie Snowpiercer is an epic metaphor for overcoming long-term adversities with hardships and unexpected wonders along the way to finding freedom.

Snowpiercer (2014)

The science fiction action film, Snowpiercer, is based on a French graphic novel about the only survivors of a future ice age aboard a massive train called Snowpiercer perpetually traveling around the world. From the back of the train a group of “lower class” passengers are led by Curtis (Chris Evans) to fight their way to the front of the train to find freedom. It’s best that you don’t know anymore to enjoy the quirky characters (Tilda Swinton) and surprises along the way. See: movie trailer

My mixed feelings about the film come from the graphically violent aspects. Though, as I mentioned, these scenes can be a metaphor for life’s painful adversities. If you can get half way through the movie there will be unexpected wonders, a lighter tone and highly intriguing visuals. You will discover the train itself is also a metaphor for our current world. So if you are looking for a unique cinematic experience filled with dark and light imagery I highly recommend Snowpiercer.

Emmanuel, your analysis of the movie is similar to what I think about. That's one of the reasons why I loved this film.
