Tip#664: Benefits of Box Office Bombs, Part 1 – After Earth

This is another challenging post to write because it’s about a movie that’s been critically savaged by many film reviewers and yet I feel compelled to share the value I received from this box office bomb. After Earth is a movie that I found entertaining and contained empowering insights for me.

I love sharing the positive experiences I’ve had about films that were considered box-office failures because it helps others discover these hidden gems. I have a vision that I will be really good friends with film studios like Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Columbia Pictures, Universal, 20th Century Fox, Dreamworks, Walt Disney and many others because they will recognize I help breathe new life into their film titles for more people to discover!

After Earth (2013)

The science fiction adventure drama, After Earth, is about a father and son who crash land on Earth after 1,000 years of abandoning its uninhabitable state. Teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) must travel through dangerous terrain in order to save himself and his father Cypher (Will Smith) who has broken both his legs. This film is filled with amazing futuristic scenery, spacecrafts and some really cool tech. See: movie trailer

The film also has many motivational messages for anyone experiencing fear and overwhelming adversity. Perhaps that’s why I resonated with this movie more then others because of my own challenges in life. I identified with its themes about perseverance, trust and faith in guidance, courage and finding inner strength. Here is one of the most powerful messages from the film…

"Fear is not real. The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is a product of our imagination causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist… Do not misunderstand me; danger is very real. But fear is a choice."

Please note that there is so much I could write about this movie being directed by M. Night Shyamalan and the subdued performances and dialogue of the film. I just want to focus on the idea that if you’ve been through times of fear and facing impossible odds that you could find inspiration from this film. And if you are motivated to take action in your life then does it matter whether or not it came from a critically panned, box-office bomb?

Remember, the classic film It’s A Wonderful Life was considered a box-office failure!
