Tip#500: How Passion Lives Forever - Anonymous

Today I am celebrating my 500th tip on this movie blog! I am celebrating 5 years of dedicated passion sharing movies that have entertained, motivated and moved me with readers around the world. And what I've discovered along the way was while I was writing my blog posts I was re-writing my mindset to be open and optimistic about myself and my journey.

Once again it was magical and synchronistic that I was drawn to seeing a movie called Anonymous reflecting the concept of re-writing what one knows. This controversial film has received both positive and negative reviews as it expresses the theory that what we know about William Shakespeare may not be the truth. For me I went to the screening with an open mind and allowed the story to be told. Thankfully, I was thoroughly entertained, motivated and moved.

Anonymous 2011

The movie Anonymous presents the fringe theory that questions Shakespeare's authorship of plays and poems known famously around the world. The film presents that these are actually the works of an Elizabethan aristocrat, Edward do Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford (Rhys Igans). For political reasons he is not able to claim authorship and so manages to get his plays performed through stage actor named William Shakespeare (Rafe Spall) through the help of playwright Ben Jonson (Sebastian Armesto).

The visuals of a recreated Elizabethan London are stunning especially when you see aerial views of the cityscapes. The costumes as well are beautiful with rich detail. And if you put aside history and see this film as simply a story or a "what if" being told then you will see that this is really about the power and passion for writing. It shows that no matter who wrote the plays we know and love they have entertained and moved people over the centuries. See: movie trailer

Let Passion Flow

I felt for Edward who had a deep passion for writing. In the end he didn't care if the world knew he wrote his plays as long as they lived on beyond his death. I saw myself in his eyes when Edward secretly attended the performances of his plays and saw how audiences were thrilled and emotionally touched by his words. Seeing this movie reminded me to keep following my passion for films and the writing this blog.

In the end it doesn't matter who I am or the struggles I went through while writing this blog. It doesn't matter that I lost my home of 15 years, faced financial crisis, bankruptcy (see tip#400) AND faced G20 riot police (see tip#369). The only thing that matters is that by following my passion I am helping people around the world with this blog. Since I started writing 5 years ago I regularly receive thank you's and positive comments all reminding me that I am making a difference in people's lives. Within 6 months of starting this blog The Washington Post featured it as a recommended resource!

Thanks to the internet, this blog will forever be online and accessible to anyone on the planet. My tips will help lift someone up in their time of despair. And if you are reading this especially if it is 100 years from now AND are inspired to follow your passion or watch a film that motivates you then I have accomplished my job!

Thank you for reading this blog. Thank you especially if you've been following my adventures for 5 years. You are also on a great adventure and I hope I've helped accelerate you forward in some way. Let's enjoy the journey together for years to come!

NOTE: I will now be blogging once a week on Sundays in order to focus on new, exciting initiatives. Stay tuned!

Tip#499: Choose A Future - Mr. Nobody

"The future creates your present."

I heard this quote at a conference this weekend and it struck me so deeply. I attended the 2012 Gateway To Your Future Conference here in Toronto and received so many answers to why I’ve been stuck spinning my wheels (see tip#481). One of the speakers was Hypnotherapist, Futurist, Healer and Life Coach Ti Caine and his message was that focusing on your future creates your present against the backdrop of the past. I was emotionally shaken to the core. My epiphany was that I needed to build a RELATIONSHIP with my future.

My financially successful career as an illustrator flowed easily and quickly without having any business plan. And I tried starting my motivational speaker career in early 2000's the same way and it hadn't worked. And even though I've tried to make 3, 5 or 10 year plans it was very difficult. I was excellent at accomplishing short term goals but long term was very foreign to me. Now I'm wondering whether or not I've been afraid to choose a future because I saw SO MANY exciting possibilities.

Mr. Nobody 2010

The science fiction drama Mr. Nobody is a rich, intricate story of the parallel lives of a man named Nemo Nobody (Jared Leto). Spanning different time zones of the 20th and 21st centuries. You see Nemo's 3 different marriages and what life is like if he chose to live with his mother or father when they separated. This movie explores the different realities that unfold when different choices are made in life. You see the benefits and consequences that result from the simplest choices or random occurrences. See: Movie trailer

Synchronistically, I watched this movie the day after the 2 day conference. It was EXACTLY what my spirit needed and it was a mirror for the meaningful coincidences that the film demonstrated. This movie and the conference helped me discover AND admit to myself that I purposefully did not choose a long term future to aim for. And it's not too late to make change. Since this epiphany I knew my primary focus right now is to build a relationship with my future. And, as Ti Caine suggests… I choose an AWESOME FUTURE!

This life really is a journey of discovery, mostly of oneself and the CONSCIOUS choices we make. Make a choice to understand who you are and what you want. Make a choice to have an awesome future for yourself!

"In life you get one take. If it’s bad you just deal with it."
Mr. Nobody (2010)

Tip#498: Catch Yourself - How Do You Know 2010

I'm coming up to posting my 500th tip on this movie blog and since I started in 2006 it's been a rich journey of self-discovery. As I admitted to myself and on this blog in tip#481, I realized I was caught "spinning my wheels" in my life and career goals. Thankfully I've confirmed important keys of breaking free. One of those keys is to keep building my self-awareness and catch myself when I THINK or BEHAVE in the ways that continually sabotage my dreams and goals.

This sounds easy and yet catching yourself takes practice and help from others because sabotaging thoughts, behaviors and habits are completely automatic and unconscious actions. When you do catch yourself they feel like exciting epiphanies, insights and AHA moments. That's when you know you've had a breakthrough for positive change.

How Do You Know 2010

The movie How Do You Know has 2 main themes that include a romantic comedy involving a love triangle and a drama about 2 people dealing with devastating life changes and challenges. Despite being the heart and soul of her team, softball player Lisa Jorgenson (Reese Witherspoon) is cut from the Team USA roster. Executive George Madison (Paul Rudd) suddenly finds himself targeted in a federal criminal investigation.

Along with the other man Lisa is seeing (Owen Wilson) these main characters are constantly catching themselves when they think or behave in a destructive way. They are able to stop and have an epiphany when they catch themselves! In one inspiring scene Lisa and George have their first dinner date together and Lisa realizes they are both having a really bad day. Instead of allowing either of themselves to vent about their problems she insists they stay utterly silent throughout dinner. At the end George's stress and anxiety had completely lifted and was extremely grateful for Lisa's insight to have a peaceful dinner together.

I watched this film twice in a row because I loved the characters, dialogue, romantic story AND I received many insights. I was also surprised to learn that this movie was considered a major box office bomb when it came out in theatres. Just goes to show that if you find a film that moves you in any way then you've found a golden nugget.

If you feel stuck spinning your wheels in your life, career or relationships do your best to catch yourself when you start the debilitating cycles. Assistance from others definitely helps so be open to people you trust. And when you do catch yourself the insights and epiphanies FEEL fantastic! I hope you experience an AHA moment today!

Inspiring quotes from How Do You Know:

"Never drink to feel better; only drink to feel even better."

"Figure out what you want and learn how to ask for it."

"You sure haven't let anything take away your spirit."

"I don’t know that I'll do great but I know I can do better."

"We are all just one small adjustment away from making our lives work."

Tip#497: Getting A Shot At Success – Live Lighter - Million Dollar Baby

I am very happy to announce that my good friend and health advisor Steph Miller has been nominated for a best blog award at Shape Magazine. She didn't even know her Live Lighter blog was nominated until the magazine contacted her! What is inspiring about this huge achievement is that it came at a time of an intense life change for her. She is also one of the close friends going through challenges I mentioned in tip#491.

Despite the emotional struggles and forced changes in her life, my friend has been given a magnificent reminder from the universe that her talents and gifts were being recognized. What a way to boost self-esteem during a difficult time! She's getting a shot at a new level of success. I invite you to vote for her blog and cheer her on! Go to: Shape Magazine

Million Dollar Baby 2004

The Oscar winning movie Million Dollar Baby is about amateur female boxer Margaret Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) who perseveres towards her dream of becoming a professional boxer. Despite her age, unsupportive family and a reluctant trainer (Clint Eastwood) she relentlessly pursues her desire. She becomes a powerhouse underdog with audiences cheering for her at every fight!

Margaret is a great example of having a leadership mindset with her incredible resilience, courage and indestructible optimism. And the message the film tells us in the end is that everyone deserves a shot at his or her dream. Everyone, no matter where they come from or problems they’ve faced, deserves a chance for success.

Let these movie heroes inspire you in feeling worthy of a shot at success. Let real-life successes like Steph Miller's blog inspire you to believe in being recognized for your own talents and gifts. Keep your eye on your dream no matter what.

Tip#496: Take it to the Next Level – Mrs. Major Tom – Footloose 2011

I am thrilled to announce that my friend, visual and recording artist Kirby Ian Anderson (K.I.A.), has a song that’s been covered by Grammy Award-winning Sheryl Crow. Her version of "Mrs. Major Tom" is included on William Shatner's latest space-themed album "Seeking Major Tom" along with other superstars U2, Elton John and Queen.

K.I.A. was inspired to write his original song because of David Bowie's classic "Major Tom" and recorded it for his second album "Adieu Shinjuku Zulu" in 2003. What's inspiring is that K.I.A. had a desire to take an already popular idea and launch it to another level. He ended up inspiring major people in the entertainment industry years later. He never approached Shatner or Crow. They came to him!

Original version "Mrs. Major Tom": Listen
Sheryl Crow's version "Mrs. Major Tom": Listen

Footloose 2011

The movie Footloose is a remake of the popular 80's film about city teen Ren MacCormack (Kenny Wormald) moving into a small town where public dancing have been banned. His rebellious spirit and passion ends up shaking up the mindsets of the townspeople especially Rev. Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid).

What inspired and surprised me was how this version preserves the elements of the original that made it an 80's cult classic. Some of the dialogue is word-for-word. The dance sequences are just as electric if not even more exciting because the dance moves and songs have been updated. So this film is both nostalgic and new and thrilling to enjoy in today's age.

See: Movie trailer
See: Dance scene

The filmmakers took an already popular idea and launched it to another level. Now a whole new generation can enjoy the songs, dance and inspirational messages of an 80's film icon. Just like K.I.A.'s song "Mrs. Major Tom", his original idea to write a song based on an iconic tune will reach a whole new audience through Sheryl Crow's fan base as well as William Shatner's fans!

Be inspired to take something to the next level. Be inspired take existing ideas and take them further. And if you are feeling the urge to improve yourself or take your life, work, career or skills to the next level be confident in your success. There is proof of successes already around you!

Tip#495: Let Go of What You THINK You Know, Part 3 – 4 More Movie Tips

An amazing synchronicity occurred the same day I posted 4 movie recommendations to help you "Let Go of What You Think You Know" in tip#491. Career and life coach, Day Merrill, called me about facilitating more movie nights at Toronto's St. Andrew's United Church screening room (see tip#451). Her first recommendation surprised me!

She recommended Regarding Henry and realized that was another amazing film that demonstrates radically transforming one's mindset for a better life. I then began to think of more excellent films to recommend to inspire the need to rewrite one's mindset or "reboot" a career or life path.

Here are 4 movie recommendations:

Eat Pray Love 2010

After losing her money, home and husband, a woman (Julia Roberts) embarks on a soul-searching journey to Italy, India and Bali. When in Bali she learns to meditate and by emptying her mind would be the key to rebuilding positive perceptions of herself and her relationships in love.

The Matrix 1999

A young man (Keanu Reeves) is shown that the world he is living in is an illusion and is actually a computer construct. This shatters his mindset of what "he thinks he knows" and learns how to adapt to the truth around him. He soon realizes his own potential and incredible strengths and gifts.

Moneyball 2011

A general manager of a baseball team (Brad Pitt) realizes he needed to rewrite the process of recruiting players in order to rebuild his decimated team. He enlists a talented analyst (Jonah Hill) who has unique ability to "think outside the box" and creates stunning success with a new, unusual team.

Regarding Henry 1991

A cold-heart lawyer (Harrison Ford) experiences a dramatic life change after getting shot in a store robbery. He is reduced to having to re-learn how to walk and talk again and all the basics in living he took for granted. He ends up rebooting his compassion and loving side towards his family.

These are all powerful movies that can help inspire you to change your destructive habits of thinking. Sometimes it takes drastic life changes to help you let go of these habits. It may take weeks, months or even years to reboot your life. If you are on this path then let movie heroes inspire you along the way. Let their courage, perseverance and indestructible optimism guide you!

Tip#494: Keep Childlike Wonder Alive - Steve Jobs – Real Steel

I absolutely LOVE the iMac computer I am working on as I write this. It's the model with the hard-drive build right into the monitor and I am so grateful every day I'm on it. I use it for emailing, surfing the net, listening to music, watching movies, collecting my photos, creating artwork, making music, making videos, iChatting and Skyping and, of course, writing. Apple has immensely helped me enjoy the quality of my life AND my work and in that way creator Steve Jobs will live on forever.

Steve Jobs, co-founder and CEO of Apple Inc. passed away on October 5, 2011 and his legacy will always be with me. I love my iPod and listen to it everyday. I marveled at how small it was when they first came out. And when the touch screens came out on iPhones and iPads I was in awe. It was like the cool gadgets I loved in Sci Fi movies and the Star Trek: The Next Generation TV show (1987) was coming true in real life. Jobs helped keep that childlike wonder alive in me with the new products he'd create.

Real Steel 2011

The science fiction movie Real Steel takes place in the near future where former boxer Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) works in the world of robot boxing matches. Soon Charlie finds himself caring for his estranged 11 year old son Max (Dakota Goyo) who quickly demonstrates a strong will and inner strengths beyond his years.

And though Max has a very grownup attitude he is still a kid that exudes glowing wonder at the stunning robots he encounters. The expression on his face while he sees his robot heroes up close is full of awe and glee. He also believes so much in the robot (Atom) he finds in a junkyard that his indestructible optimism makes a believer of his father too. Together Max and Charlie discover they are an excellent team and make their dreams come true with Atom as the ultimate underdog in the robot boxing world.

Max's expression of wonder was a mirror for me on how I feel about Apple's technologies. Steve Jobs has helped bring the world of Sci Fi into the present and it makes me feel excited to be alive every day I use my iMac or iPod. And whether you've experienced the joy of Apple products or not I hope you are keeping your childlike wonder alive. That sense of wonder is what fuels your positive energy and happiness! Feel that sense of awe today!

Tip#493: Find That Expert To Help You Succeed – Moneyball

REVELATION: I need a successful business expert/mentor to help harness and focus my overflowing creativity AND wealth of movie knowledge.

SOLUTION: Get out of my own way!

So there. I've just put it out to the world of what I first announced in tip#458 about seeking a mentor. And yet I keep diverging and digressing from this goal. Thankfully movies are helping me with solutions. I watched the thought provoking film Revolver again (see tip#286) and it reminded me that I really must prevent the "ego voice" part of me from sabotaging my dreams and goals.

I also know my daily meditations (see tip#482) are helping me and I still believe making inward changes WILL result in my external success with my goals. Once again, with a calm mind, my true inner voice (not the "ego" voice) led me to another ideal movie to excite my spirit and help me persevere...

Moneyball 2011

The movie Moneyball is based on a true story of general manager Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) and his unique and controversial scouting methods he used with the baseball team the Oakland Athletics. The story shows that when Beane was faced with an impossible task of rebuilding his decimated team he discovered and hired the analytical talents of Peter Brand (Jonah Hill).

Beane was a visionary and together with Brand rewrote the process of scouting and drafting baseball players. They both met with extreme resistance from others and it was a long road to seeing any success. Ultimately, the Athletics set an American league record of 20 consecutive wins.

I was deeply inspired to see this story of a man faced with an impossible task and finding the solution working with someone with a unique expertise and talent. This film reminded me that my goal is similar and to do my best and focus on finding that business expert/mentor that can help me to the next level of my career.

Sometimes we have revelations of what we need most in our lives or careers and yet there is a part of ourselves that fears taking the next step. It is that other part of ourselves we must tap into for achieving our goals. That part is filled with courage and willing to take risks. Tap into that part of yourself today!

Tip#492: Surround Yourself with Amazing Friends & Soul Buddies - 50/50

I feel so blessed that I am surrounded by amazing friends. Through the darkest of times (see tip#400) I've had the unconditional love and support of friends who I believe are actually angels in disguise. I've even mentioned some of them many times in this blog: Live Lighter/Writer Guru (Steph Miller) and Money/Wealth Guru (Patrick Bizindavyi). And I have so many other friends I call "soul buddies" who have stood by me whenever the world was crumbling around me.

One of these "soul buddies" recently helped me deal with an emotionally stressful challenge. What I needed was an expert in communication and relationship skills building and my friend and colleague Tammy Cunningham (Facilitator & Existential Detective) was there for me. She was the facilitator of the life-changing workshop I attended last year called The Mastery of Self-Expression. I wish everyone around the world was as blessed as I to have friends who'd be there through thick and thin.

50/50 2011

The movie 50/50 is a "dramedy" about a young man named Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who discovers he has a rare type of cancer. It is also about his best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) who supports him on so many levels. Kyle is there helping lift his friend's spirit, stand firm against Adam's unfaithful girlfriend (Bryce Dallas Howard) and to help Adam to always see the bright side of having cancer (causing humorous results).

Cancer is no laughing matter and yet this movie is getting huge praise by film critics and audiences for balancing comedy with drama (dramedy). It also received a standing ovation at its premiere here at the Toronto International Film Festival. The story is loosely based on the life of screenwriter Will Reiser who's real-life friend Seth Rogen supported him when he was diagnosed with cancer at age 25.

If you are going through intense challenges in your life there is a chance that some friends will not be able to handle the situation. When that happens do your best to focus on the people who DO stand by you in your time of need. Hopefully you already have friends who are soul buddies AND angels in disguise. Just be open and honest about your challenges and these earth angels will reveal themselves with warm, glowing hearts and a hand to help you up!
